Tampa Electric Co. filed its state-mandated plan Wednesday for how it will handle the costs that data centers add to the grid, promising that residents would be protected from bill increases. The proposal creates a new electricity rate specifically for customers who use at least 50 megawatts as their average monthly peak, and it imposes certain requirements for those users. They would have to sign a 20-year contract to ensure that if Tampa Electric builds more power infrastructure to support their needs, the company won’t leave without paying financial penalties. Tampa Electric’s filings were required by the data center law Gov. Ron DeSantis signed earlier this year , which mandated that all corporate electric utilities in the state outline by Oct. 1 how they plan to insulate residents from the costs of the power-intensive warehouses.
