Bulgaria Ranks Third in EU for Share of People Living in Overcrowded Homes

In Bulgaria, 52.8% of young people aged 15 to 29 lived in overcrowded homes in 2025, putting the country third in the EU on this measure, according to the latest data from Eurostat published on Tuesday on the statistical agency’s website. For the Bulgarian population as a whole, the share was 32.5% last year. Among EU countries, only Romania (40.4%) and Latvia (38.9%) had a higher proportion of their population living in overcrowded homes. In 2024, the share of Bulgarians aged 15 to 29 living in overcrowded homes was 53.2%, while the figure for the total population was 33.8%. The gap in Bulgaria between the share of young people living in overcrowded homes and the corresponding share for the total population was 20.3 percentage points. Bulgaria was also among the three EU countries where this gap was at least 20 percentage points.
