Florida seeks input for first science standards revamp since 2008

The big story: For the first time in years, Florida is revamping its science standards. The conversation about what’s proposed is coming to Hillsborough County this evening. Florida Department of Education officials will present the recommendations and take public comment during a stop on its listening tour at 5 p.m. Tuesday at Armwood High School, 12000 E Highway 92 in Seffner. The department said in a news release that its standards will be “content-rich, coherent and grounded in facts and evidence” — things it said other states will not provide. “Science is not a slogan and it is not a sermon,” Florida education commissioner Henry Mack said in the release. “It is the hard-won body of knowledge about nature, human nature, and the rational order of which we are discoverers and stewards.” The last time Florida overhauled its science standards, the debate came down to disputes over evolution vs. creation . The language keeping evolution in the classroom guidelines narrowly won State Boa
