NS&I alert: Britons missing out on £217million savings boost in lost accounts

Britons who have an account with National Savings and Investments (NS&I) could be missing out on hundreds of millions of pounds' worth of savings. Forgotten cash ISA accounts held by the government-backed savings institutio now contain more than £217million, according to newly released data. This is a sum that has ballooned almost fivefold since 2020/21, when it stood at just £36.7million. The figures, obtained by The Telegraph, reveal that tens of thousands of savers are unwittingly leaving substantial sums languishing in accounts they appear to have abandoned. In total, nearly 43,000 dormant ISAs were recorded in 2024/25, a dramatic surge from fewer than 8,700 four years earlier. NS&I classifies an ISA as dormant once 15 years have passed since the account holder last carried out a transaction. The interest rate on these neglected accounts sits at a meagre 0.25 per cent, as they tend to be matured or discontinued products that are funnelled into NS&I's residual account. By contrast,
