While the changing color of the leaves is always a trustworthy sign of autumn’s arrival, apples cropping up at orchards across the Midwest are another. Corn mazes, cider doughnuts, petting zoos and plenty of u-pick apples (as well as sunflowers, raspberries and pumpkins in some cases) await at farms in Illinois, Indiana and Wisconsin within driving distance of Chicago where families can pluck fruit fresh from the tree and enjoy plenty of other seasonal activities. “We feel like this is a place for families to create lasting memories,” said Annette Jenkins, representative at All Seasons Orchard in suburban Woodstock. “It’s also an opportunity to relax, spend time together and slow down.
