“Our nomination committee is a committee of Bulgarians,” presidential candidate Iliana Iotova said at an election campaign meeting with citizens in Smolyan on Saturday. Iotova is running as an independent candidate nominated by an initiative committee. She said her supporters included people who had to divide their limited incomes every day among medicines, their children’s needs and household bills. Iotova said she wanted to see a “different Bulgaria” where the law applied equally to everyone and the state protected its citizens. She argued that in recent years the political elite had focused on remaining in power. She recalled the 2020 protests and said the coalitions and political “assamblages” that followed had led to disappointment and a loss of hope. In her view, the state should once again provide protection for people, while institutions should work in their interests.
