Low Danube Level Does Not Affect Kozloduy NPP Safety, Nuclear Regulatory Agency Chair Says

The low level of the Danube River does not affect the safety of Kozloduy Nuclear Power Plant, Nuclear Regulatory Agency (NRA) Chair Tsanko Bachiyski told reporters on Friday. He said that the situation was unprecedented, but the low river level poses a threat only to electricity production and does not compromise safety in any way. A Procedure for Actions in the Event of an Emergency Low Level of the Danube River has been developed for situations when the river level falls. The main actions under the procedure are based on the river level, with the first one being taken when the level reaches 21.50 m according to the Baltic System. At that point, the level begins to be monitored daily and the pump grilles are cleaned if necessary. At 21 m, maximum stocks of water and solutions needed for shutting down the units are accumulated, along with several other measures.
