A freshman steals the show: Quarterback Sam Holcomb leads Brother Rice's upset of Mount Carmel

Mount Carmel vs. Brother Rice is not a normal high school football game. Not this season. The Caravan won Class 8A last year and entered the season as the most talented and hyped high school football team in area history. The host Crusaders won Class 7A last season and feature multiple major Power Five recruits, including defensive end Kameron McGee, who some scouts consider the best prospect in the country in the junior class. To add to the spectacle, a Chicago Police Department helicopter did a flyover after the National Anthem. That may have been a first for a high school football game in the city. And out of all that, a freshman stole the show. Brother Rice quarterback Sam Holcomb threw for two touchdowns and ran for two more as the No. 4 Crusaders knocked off No. 2 Mount Carmel 35-24. “For a kid to be 14 or 15 and do that, it is incredible,” Caravan coach Jordan Lynch said. “Kids like him come around every 15 years.” Holcomb was 8-for-15 passing for 154 yards and had nine carries
