BART considers adding more surveillance cameras as part of safety push

BART leaders are looking at the impact of surveillance cameras across the transit system, with the possibility of adding more. BART officials say surveillance cameras, along with the agency’s new fare gates , have been instrumental in cutting down on crime. BART will ask its board to continue the surveillance already in place and add two new cameras — one at BART Police Department headquarters and another at the Union City at-grade pedestrian crossing. Closed-circuit television cameras are used extensively across BART to identify and prevent threats to people and property. According to BART, the cameras assisted with more than 3,700 video requests. More than 2,300 were for criminal investigations, more than 1,300 were for train car video and more than two dozen were for court subpoenas. BART police also produced 220 wanted-person bulletins using images from the cameras. The data comes as BART marks one year since new fare gates were installed at all 50 stations.
