North suburban teacher and volleyball coach charged with secretly recording student

A suburban middle school teacher who also coaches high school girls junior varsity volleyball is facing a felony charge after officials said he secretly recorded a student. Dagoberto Diaz, a teacher at Carl Sandburg Middle School and girls JV volleyball coach at Mundelein High School, was arrested by Mundelein police and charged with one felony count of unauthorized video recording of a juvenile, Mundelein D75 and D120 Supt. Dr. Corey Tafoya said in a letter to families Tuesday. The charge, Tafoya said, came after students made a report to school officials. Administrators then alerted law enforcement and the Department of Children and Family Services. “While we are deeply troubled by this situation, we are also incredibly proud of the students who demonstrated the courage to speak up when something did not feel right.” The school placed Diaz on administrative leave the same day the alleged behavior was reported, Tafoya said.
