The UFC are in support of a push to ban the highly polarising oblique kick. An oblique kick is a technique originating from the French martial art Savate where a fighter drives the ball of their heel into an opponent’s thigh or knee. Jones used oblique kicks as an effective technique during his career, as have Garry and Rountree Jr more recently Getty The kick is banned in sparring by most MMA gyms due to its damaging effects, but remains legal in competition. Modestas Bukaskus had to undergo corrective surgery on his knee and spent a lengthy stint out of action after Khalil Rountree Jr stopped him with a heavy oblique kick in 2021. Shavkat Rakhmonov has, meanwhile, been sidelined for over two years with recurring knee injuries stemming from the oblique kicks he absorbed from Ian Garry during their bout in 2024.
