Hurricane Polo fuels fears of landslides and flooding in Mexico’s southwest

Hurricane Polo is set to skirt the Pacific coast of Mexico and could bring mudslides and life-threatening flooding. Forecasters say Polo is a major hurricane with maximum sustained winds of 150 mph. It is expected to remain offshore but the U.S. National Hurricane Center has described it as “extremely dangerous.” At its peak, it was a Category 5 storm with top winds of 180 mph. Another Pacific cyclone named Odalys has strengthened into a hurricane, but is expected to remain far from any coast. Meanwhile, a tropical depression near Hawaii is expected to intensify and affect the island chain as soon as Friday.
