Season's First Snow Falls in Romania's Southern Carpathians

Romania recorded its first snow of the autumn in the highest parts of the Southern Carpathians overnight from Monday to Tuesday, followed by heavier snowfall overnight from Tuesday to Wednesday, the National Meteorological Administration said on Wednesday. Thick snow covered the Transfagarasan, Romania's best-known mountain road. The heaviest accumulation was around Balea Lake. The Brasov Regional Directorate of Roads and Bridges deployed two maintenance vehicles and spread more than five tonnes of salt to keep the road open, the authority said on Wednesday. Authorities advised motorists heading to the area to check the weather in advance and travel only in vehicles properly equipped for winter conditions.
