Autumn may be officially here but the cold chill that swept over many of us yesterday felt more like winter. Just once in a while, an announcement comes out of Government that cuts right through. This one didn’t just cut through. It cut to the heart. We've all read George Orwell’s dystopian novel 1984; we all know the phrase "Big Brother's watching you". Whatever your political leanings, a Government setting up a unit for counter-disinformation feels sinister. Even the name of this new unit smacks of double-think, propaganda and control. Already it’s been slammed as totalitarian Government in action, and darkly renamed The Ministry of Truth.
