Residents of Long Island building with faulty fire alarms going off get hazy scare

Tenants of a ritzy Long Island apartment building that has been plagued by false fire alarms had quite a scare Wednesday night. They were about to gather in the community room of the Allure in Mineola for a meeting about the excessive false alarms when they smelled something burning and saw a haze in the air, but the fire alarms did not go off. “It smelled like smoke, there was a great big deal of haze when we walked in,” said resident Kevin Hofman. “But we couldn’t see where the smoke was coming from.” Concerned that the fire alarm was not activated, they called 911 and two fire departments responded. Firefighters from Williston Park and Garden City determined the burning smell and the haze was the result of the heat being turned on for the first time this season. “Sometimes you get a burning odor from dust and debris that maybe has accumulated over the season.
