Trump bypasses historians' review of DC arch project in rarely used move: report

A federal historic preservation council led by President Donald Trump's appointees abruptly called off a review with local governments of a planned 250-foot arch in Washington, D.C. The Advisory Council on Historic Preservation said it would stop consulting with officials in the nation's capital and Virginia about how the arch could affect nearby historic sites, including Arlington National Cemetery, Robert E. Lee's former home and memorials on the National Mall, reported Politico . The decision came after historic preservation officials in both jurisdictions refused to approve a National Park Service plan to reduce the arch's harm to historic properties. In letters sent Monday, they called the Park Service's push to finalize the plan "premature" and urged the agency to wait until the project's effects are better understood.
