Veliko Tarnovo to Host Main Celebrations Marking 118th Anniversary of Bulgaria’s Independence

Veliko Tarnovo will be the centre of celebrations marking the 118th anniversary of the declaration of Bulgaria’s independence on September 22, 1908. Ceremonies will also be held in Sofia, Varna, Burgas and a number of other cities across the country. In Veliko Tarnovo, the day will begin with a festive liturgy at the Church of the Holy Forty Martyrs, where Prince Ferdinand read the Manifesto declaring Bulgaria’s independence in 1908. A historical reenactment of the events of September 22, 1908, will be staged in the church grounds. The programme will continue with a military ritual for the raising of the national flag at the Tsarevets Architectural and Museum Reserve, followed by speeches, the laying of wreaths and flowers, and a festive procession to the Mother Bulgaria monument. The representative ensemble of the Armed Forces and musicians participating in the International Military Bands Festival will perform during the celebrations.
