Inmate, 10 correctional officers hospitalized after cell fire at Cook County Jail

An inmate and 10 correctional officers were hospitalized on Sunday afternoon after a fire was set inside a cell at the Cook County Jail, authorities said. The Cook County Sheriff’s Office said at around 3 p.m., correctional deputies responded to a small mattress fire started by an inmate inside his cell on Tier 5A in the Residential Treatment Unit. Deputies extinguished the fire and evacuated the inmate, who was the only person inside the cell. Due to smoke from the fire, all individuals in custody on the tier and other tiers of the fifth floor were evacuated. The inmate who started the fire was taken to an area hospital as a precaution and said to be in good condition. The inmate was later released and cleared to return to the jail. Ten correctional deputies were taken to the hospital for smoke inhalation and listed in stable condition. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
