Billions of people appear to have been left without access to social media after Facebook and Instagram went down. Shortly after 2am BST, the world's two largest social media platforms were left unusable. The pair both boast north of three billion accounts. Outage monitoring site DownDetector showed huge spikes as people around the world rushed to try and check what was going on.
