SF could move closer to potential takeover of PG&E power grid

San Francisco could move one step closer Tuesday to a potential takeover of PG&E’s power grid in the city. The city has considered taking over PG&E’s power grid for years, but the issue was reignited following a widespread blackout last December that left a third of San Francisco in the dark in the days leading up to the Christmas holiday. Since then, steps to expand public power have followed. In July, the San Francisco Planning Commission unanimously certified the final environmental impact report for a proposed acquisition of PG&E’s assets. On Tuesday, PG&E is appealing that decision to the San Francisco Board of Supervisors. If the board rejects the appeal, it would clear one hurdle for the city to potentially use eminent domain for public power. Several hurdles would still remain, including determining how much PG&E’s assets are worth.
