Following its recent focus on the Gaslamp Quarter through “Operation Last Call”, the San Diego Police Department expanded its safety efforts to the San Diego Central Library area, announced Friday. Recent violent incidents, including multiple stabbings and a July murder, have sparked safety concerns in the area. Library staff, community members, and a nearby school have noted issues involving open alcohol and drug activity, assaults, violence, and other concerns from local businesses, residents and library patrons, according to the department. To address the issue, the SDPD’s Neighborhood Policing Division, along with the Central Division, is launching “Operation Overdue” to provide an additional law enforcement presence around the Central Library.
