Berkeley's Triple Rock Brewery to close after 40 years in downtown

A beloved brewery in downtown Berkeley has announced that it is planning to close after four decades of operations. Triple Rock Brewery and Taphouse on Shattuck Avenue will close by the end of the year, its owners wrote in a post on the brewery’s website. The business opened in 1986, originally called Roaring Rock Brewery. The owners, brothers John and Martin Reid, say this is the oldest, continuously operating brewpub in the U.S. In the post on the website, the owners said they are ready to retire. The owners told SF Gate that the general decline in alcohol sales also contributed to their decision to close. The brewpub will remain open until the end of the Cal Berkeley semester in December, patrons are encouraged to come by and share memories before this chapter closes.
