Bulgarian Boxing Federation President Krasimir Ininski officially opened the European Boxing Championships for men and women in Sofia on Thursday. The tournament will take place from September 17 to 25 at Asics Arena. The opening ceremony was attended by Youth and Sports Minister Encho Keryazov, Bulgarian Olympic Committee President Vessela Lecheva, and professional boxing legend and current World Boxing President Gennady Golovkin. Nearly 400 boxers from 44 countries will compete in 20 weight categories at the continental championships, including 15 Bulgarian athletes. Head coaches Joel Arate and Borislav Georgiev selected their squads for the championships, with Victorio Iliev and Hristea Ninova withdrawing at the last minute. Earlier on Thursday, debutant Valeria Andreeva opened Bulgaria's campaign at the tournament with a 0-5 judges' decision loss to Sara Beram of Croatia in the women's 65kg category.
