Commission for Consumer Protection Chair: We Reached European Average in Prices, but Lag Behind in Terms of Purchasing Power

In an interview for Bulgarian National Television on Saturday, the newly elected chair of the Commission for Consumer Protection, Maya Manolova, said that as far as prices are concerned, Bulgaria has reached the average levels in EU countries, but when it comes to purchasing power, Bulgarians are still far behind. Manolova took up the post on September 18 following a government decision. According to Manolova, Prime Minister Rumen Radev expects to see results and for the rapid rise in prices to be brought to a halt. "The adoption of the euro in Bulgaria was handled in a way that sent prices soaring and crushed consumers, and there is a consensus on this," Manolova said. She argued that prices had risen sharply even before the euro was adopted. Dairy products, for example, are being sold at markups of 80%, according to data from the Commission for Protection of Competition, she said, adding that such markups are currently not subject to regulatory oversight or sanctions.
