From "After the Gold Rush: 5 Ghost Towns to Explore This Fall/These mostly abandoned wilderness outposts, resplendent in their solitude, invite curious visitors to imagine what life was like during the boom times" (NYT gift link). I don't know, what do you do for vacation? This appeals to me, and I almost never go anywhere.
