GOP 'power grab' as North Carolina court hands elections to far-right auditor

The North Carolina Appeals Court has cemented the state legislature's "power grab" over elections, taking control from the State Board of Elections and handing it to Republican State Auditor Dave Boliek a local reporter said. WRAL reporter Will Doran said on X on Wednesday that the court said that since the legislature didn't hand power to itself, it was a legal move. Doran noted that elections will be run by someone other than the executive branch "for the first time in 125 years." The 51-page order walks through the 2-1 party-line vote and said that the legislature didn't violate the North Carolina Constitution’s separation of powers clause by taking away executive authority The News & Observer reported that the judges did acknowledge that it "resulted in a partisan shift." After the 2024 election, the legislature changed the law that allowed the governor to appoint members to the State Board of Elections to the lower-level state auditor post. Voters were angry because they cast ball
