Pepsi Co. layoff hits 70% of workers at Cheverly plant

Dozens of workers at the Pepsi plant in Prince George’s County were notified Monday that they no longer have jobs after a major layoff by the company. The plant in Cheverly is a local landmark, with its iconic sign on the side of the building. It’s been in operation for more than 60 years. But nearly 70% of the workers that have worked there for decades are losing their jobs, Pepsi Co. announced: 98 of the 143 employees at the plant were laid off. Pepsi says it’s shutting down manufacturing and warehouse operations at the Cheverly location, including transportation and fleet. At-large Prince George’s County Councilmember Jolene Ivey, who lives in Cheverly, said it’s a big loss. “It’s hard for the people who are losing their jobs, 100% that is the most important thing,” she said. “And then for those of us who’ve just grown up with the Pepsi plant there, it just seems… I don’t know, it’s just hard.
