Belgium's Charleroi Airport Will Be Affected by Air Traffic Controllers Strike

Belgium’s second-busiest airport Charleroi will be affected by a strike by air traffic controllers starting Wednesday, local media reported. The air traffic controllers have announced that they will stop work for 24 consecutive nights, from 10:00 pm to 8 am, through October 10. The airport has not yet specified how many passengers and flights will be affected by the strike, but significant disruptions are expected. Notice of the industrial action was filed at the end of July and is linked to a dispute between the employer and employees over the amount of night-shift allowances paid to air traffic controllers. The employer claims that the unions have demanded a 160% increase in night-shift pay. According to the unions, the current allowances are negligible and do not reflect the level of responsibility involved in providing a key service.
