More than 1,000 sheep farmers from across Romania protested in central Bucharest Tuesday, calling for the resignation of Alexandru Bociu, head of the National Sanitary Veterinary and Food Safety Authority. They accuse him of the way he has handled outbreaks of peste des petits ruminants (PPR), a situation that has led to a halt in exports of live animals. Representatives of the sector oppose the planned mandatory vaccination of livestock and are calling for compensation for animals that have been culled.
