Varna Exhibition Commemorates Proclamation of Bulgaria as People's Republic on September 15, 1946

An exhibition at the State Archives in Varna commemorates the proclamation of Bulgaria as a People's Republic in 1946, as well as the referendum that approved this change. Titled "From History to the Future – 80 Years of the Republic of Bulgaria," the exhibition was prepared jointly with the Department of New History at the Regional Museum of History in Varna and the Thracian Scientific Institute. The exhibition features leaflets, propaganda materials, ballots, photographs, stamps, and other items related to these events. On September 15, 1946, Bulgaria was proclaimed a People's Republic following a referendum held on September 8. In the months leading up to the vote, an intense propaganda campaign was underway, urging the public to choose the republic. The referendum itself was framed as a move "to abolish the monarchy", and the desired outcome had been clearly established beforehand, said Zlatka Antova from the museum.
