‘This is absolutely crazy': Tea importer forced to leave Marin County compound

A Lagunitas man whose unique property was seized for unpermitted buildings peacefully left his land Tuesday under the direction of Marin County sheriff’s deputies. David Lee Hoffman drove out of his property he calls “The Last Resort” and a short while later the gate was chained and padlocked. For 53 years, Hoffman constructed unique buildings and caves for his team import business. He got into hot water with the county for not having permits for the work. After a lengthy legal battle, the court seized the property and ordered him to vacate. “This is absolutely crazy,” Hoffman said. “Absolutely crazy. They’re taking away my property, confiscating my possessions, putting me out of business.” The county said it is following the ruling of the Marin County Superior Court. The land is to be sold with the new owner responsible for correcting the code violations.
