Taj Gibson retires from NBA, joins Chicago Bulls' coaching staff

Longtime NBA veteran Taj Gibson has officially retired from the league, but Chicago Bulls fans will still be seeing plenty of him. Gibson, who spent the first eight seasons of his NBA career with Chicago, will become an assistant coach for new Bulls bench boss Tiago Splitter, the team announced on Monday afternoon. Gibson will be joined by Wes Unseld Jr., Blake Ahearn, Jamelle McMillan, Rex Kalamian, Jonah Herscu and Jordan Brink as assistants on Splitter’s staff, according to the Bulls. The talented Gibson, a draft pick of the Bulls in 2009, had a stellar eight-year run with the team to kick off his career. He finished fifth in Rookie of the Year voting in the 2009-10 season, and finished in the top-10 of Sixth Man of the Year award voting on three occasions, including a runner-up finish in 2014. He averaged 9.4 points, 6.4 rebounds and 1.2 blocks per game during his eight-year run with the Bulls. He also spent four seasons with the New York Knicks and made stops with the Timberwolves
