Off the news: University of Hawaii to study plantation-era pollutants

The sugar cane plantations once dominating Hawaii’s economy may be gone, but “legacy pollutants” including arsenic, lead and dioxins continue to lurk in island soil, waters and even building materials. That’s prompted a University of Hawaii at Manoa-led research team to investigate whether wildfires, flooding and other disturbances connected to natural disasters expose residents to increased health risks.
