Miami-Dade firefighters turn to rope rescue to help people stuck in elevator

Miami-Dade Fire Rescue crews had to turn to a specialized rope rescue operation after an elevator got stuck with people inside. Firefighters first checked on the occupants, who were not hurt. But because of the elevator’s position, the department’s technical rescue team was called in. “Miami-Dade Fire Rescue’s (MDFR) Technical Rescue Team (TRT) personnel are trained to use specialized rescue techniques to safely reach and remove individuals from confined, elevated or difficult-to-access spaces,” officials explained. Crews set up a rope rescue system—using anchors, harnesses and safety lines—to lower a specially trained firefighter into the elevator car and lift its occupants to safety. Miami-Dade Fire Rescue did not immediately say whether the elevator that got stuck was located, or what caused it to malfunction. No injuries were reported.
