UNICEF Representative in Bulgaria Mioh Nemoto visited Pernik on Friday as part of the UPSHIFT youth empowerment and social innovation programme and the city’s bid to become European Youth Capital in 2029. The visit included meetings with young people involved in initiatives that help them develop ideas and find solutions to issues affecting their communities. Nemoto, who took up his post as UNICEF Representative in Bulgaria in August 2026, stressed the importance of working together with institutions, partner organisations and young people themselves to address challenges facing children and youth across Bulgaria. Initiatives such as UPSHIFT are particularly valuable because they bring young people together to develop ideas and create solutions to problems that matter to them. He also pointed to progress in Bulgaria since his previous visit around four years ago, while noting that challenges remain, particularly across different regions.
