National Television Host Georgi Angelov's Removal Discussed by Regulator and Politicians

The removal of long-serving journalist Georgi Angelov as host of History.BG, a Monday evening show of Bulgarian National Television (BNT), was discussed by the electronic media regulator on Thursday and elicited further political statements. Angelov announced his removal in a Facebook post on Wednesday. BNT said in a statement that the move was part of a broader change to its programming strategy. The public-service broadcaster noted that it is not parting with any of its presenters or long-serving journalists. Opposition politicians suspect pressure from the government. It transpired that Angelov's other programme, To Europe and Forward, was also removed from the airwaves of BNT2. On Thursday, the issue was discussed by the Council for Electronic Media (CEM). The regulator decided to hold a hearing of the BNT management regarding its plans for programming changes which the broadcaster said have led to Angelov's removal.
