Vaccination against Sheep, Goat Pox Not Needed for Now - Agriculture Minister

There is currently no need to decide on vaccination against sheep and goat pox, Agriculture and Food Minister Plamen Abrovsky said on Thursday. He noted that a decision would be made based on the epizootic situation, if and when circumstances require it. Vaccination is one of the measures used to contain the disease, but it is not a panacea, the Minister added. Abrovsky compared the current situation with last year, when 194 outbreaks were recorded, according to him, versus 26 so far this year. He said the figures reflect a significant change in the epizootic situation. The figures come as Bulgaria has reported a number of new outbreaks in recent weeks, with cases confirmed in Blagoevgrad, Haskovo, Kyustendil and Yambol regions. Veterinary authorities have responded by establishing protection and surveillance zones, restricting the movement of animals, and carrying out inspections and testing in affected and nearby areas.
