Turkish Energy Minister Alparslan Bayraktar identified the extraction of gas from the Black Sea as one of the most important gas projects for Turkiye. In an interview on Wednesday for Turkish television CNBC-e, he said that oil drilling should begin in the Western Black Sea as soon as possible. Bayraktar explained that Turkiye currently operates six deep-sea drilling vessels, one of which is working off Somalia while another is engaged in a new Black Sea development programme covering fresh terrain. He noted that drilling is underway in the western, central and eastern parts of the Black Sea in areas already explored, with efforts focused both on boosting gas reserves and, he hoped, on soon launching oil-targeted drilling. He acknowledged this oil drilling would be technically demanding and take more time, but said work in the Western Black Sea aimed at oil extraction would begin soon.
