Two gorillas welcomed to San Diego Zoo and Safari Park

Six-year-old and 33-year-old gorillas have made their way to San Diego Zoo and the San Diego Zoo Safari Park on Tuesday, joining two different troops upon arrival. Both animals are western lowland gorillas, which are classified as critically endangered despite having no natural predators. They are instead threatened by wildlife trafficking for illegal pet trade and loss of habitat, the SDZWA said. The younger of the two, Kitoko, was transferred from Woodland Park, while the elder, Matumaini, is coming from a zoo in Kansas. Guests will soon be able to see Kitoko with the San Diego Zoo’s bachelor troop at the gorilla habitat in Lost Forest, while Matumaini will join Safari Park’s Gorilla Forest family troop as a silverback. The SDZWA’s African Forest Conservation Hub works to protect western lowland gorillas and their native habitats.
