Katie Taylor’s retirement fight delivers impressive viewership numbers and breaks record

Katie Taylor’s last dance was a monumental success, both inside and outside of the ring. The Irish legend bid farewell to boxing on Saturday night by becoming a three-time undisputed champion in front of a record attendance for a female combat sports headliner. Taylor, 40, rolled back the years to dominate 29-year-old Pili Getty 83,000 adoring fans packed into the iconic Croke Park to witness Taylor secure a dominant unanimous decision victory over Flora Pili of France. Taylor’s fairytale send-off was equally as well supported by those watching at home, with the event drawing a peak audience of 1.6 million on Irish public service broadcaster RTÉ. That equates to roughly 30 per cent of the Irish population, and doesn’t take into account the masses who flooded into pubs to watch the event or those who came together in large gatherings for group watchalongs.
