40 years of Oprah: Her impact on Chicago and beyond

When Oprah Winfrey arrived in Chicago in 1984 to host WLS-TV’s “A.M. Chicago,” it was a major accomplishment. Then, her ratings soared, and two years later, that show went national. “I can’t believe it’s been 40 years,” said Joel Nickson, the owner of the now-closed Wishbone restaurant. Nickson and his wife owned the restaurant that was originally located across from Oprah’s Harpo Studios in Chicago’s West Loop neighborhood. “(In the) early 90s, it was different over there,” he said, “It was skid row back in those days and she was a good neighbor to have. She was an engine for the West Loop and also Chicago.” The show and the studio served as a catalyst for development on Chicago’s West Side. She broadcasted over 4,000 episodes over 25 seasons in Chicago. The building where Harpo Studios was located was demolished in 2016 to make way for McDonald’s headquarters, along with blocks of upscale restaurants and high-end highrises.
