GERB Decides not to Field Candidate in Presidential Elections

GERB, the largest opposition party in Bulgaria, announced Tuesday that it is not going to field a candidate for the October 25 presidential elections. The decision was made at a meeting of the narrow party leadership the same day and was made public in a press release. It said that the reasoning largely overlapped arguments raised by the party leader, Boyko Borissov, in recent days. Borissov himself was against nominating a presidential candidate arguing that it was wrong to have one when the party is not sure it would be a winning candidate. Other party leadership members thought otherwise. On September 6, Borissov said if his party nominated a presidential candidate, that would be "the greatest favour it could do for Iliana Iotova", the incumbent president who is also running in October. He added though that the decision is up to the party leadership.
