Latter-day Saints are beginning a new Sunday rhythm this weekend, now that the second-hour block has been split into 25-minute classes . This change can feel like a jarring transition after decades of hourlong classes. For a millennial like me, who grew up with three hours of consecutive Sunday meetings, a church schedule can feel almost doctrinal — even canonical. Sacrament meeting, Sunday School, Primary, Young Women, Relief Society and priesthood quorums came to be simply the immutable recipe of what “church” was. Then I started looking backward, studying the history of church meeting configurations. Soon enough, I discovered that change may be the most consistent thing about the schedule of meetings in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
