September 4, 1974: Kozloduy N-plant Is Formally Commissioned

Bulgaria's only N-plant, Kozloduy, was formally commissioned on September 4, 1974. The first sod for the project was turned on October 14, 1969. The project implemented a Bulgarian-Soviet intergovernmental Agreement on Cooperation in the Construction of a Nuclear Power Plant on the River Danube near the Town of Kozloduy (Northwestern Bulgaria), signed on July 15, 1966. The USSR undertook to assist Bulgaria in the design, the supply of equipment and the posting of professionals for the facility, which was blueprinted jointly by Moscow’s Teploelektroproekt Institute and Sofia’s Energoproekt. Most of the equipment came from the Soviet Union, and some units were procured from the GDR, Czechoslovakia and Hungary.
