An AI chatbot is many things — a digital assistant, a web crawler, an agent to complete tasks on your behalf. One thing it isn’t, however, is a legally protected confidant. According to a report by the Washington Post , conversations with AI chatbots are increasingly used as evidence in court cases, outlining why you shouldn’t just tell your favorite bot anything that’s on your mind. Here’s what you can do to keep yourself safe. The report details how chatbot conversations with ChatGPT and Claude were cited in 12 different court cases, many of which led to convictions. The cases ranged in severity from a young man caught up in the social media addiction trial to more violent cases where a Brazilian father (unsuccessfully) asked ChatGPT for tips to hire a hit man to murder himself and his son. You’re not talking to a bot in your phone. You’re exchanging ideas with an entire data center. In each of these cases, public chat logs were brought into court through the discovery process or by
