Wholesale Prices of Most Fruits and Vegetables Fall, Staple Food Prices Rise over Past Week

Tomatoes recorded the largest weekly price increase among vegetables, rising 27.55% to EUR 1.25 per kg. Courgettes gained 11.69% to EUR 0.86 per kg in the week ending September 4, according to the State Commission for Commodity Exchanges and Wholesale Markets. The Wholesale Food Price Index, which tracks wholesale food prices in Bulgaria, rose by 0.4% to 2.284 points, compared with 2.275 points a week earlier. The base level of 1.000 points was set in 2005. Green peppers fell 9.65% to EUR 1.03 per kg, while red peppers were down 9.73% to EUR 1.15 per kg. Cabbage declined 1.85% to EUR 0.53 per kg. Carrots rose 3.98% to EUR 0.79 per kg. Prices also fell for onions, down 9.68% to EUR 0.56 per kg; cucumbers, down 5.56% to EUR 1.19 per kg; and potatoes, down 5.93% to EUR 0.58 per kg. Among fruits monitored by the State Commission on Commodity Exchanges and Wholesale Markets, lemons recorded the sharpest decline, down 12.62% to EUR 1.80 per kg.
