Sailors aboard the USS Abraham Lincoln made port in Thailand this week after a record-setting deployment, and new accounts from the crew are revealing just how punishing the mission became. On shore leave for the first time in nine months, sailors from the Lincoln and USS Frank E. Petersen Jr. told The Wall Street Journal that the worst thing about their grueling deployment was not knowing when it would be over. “This deployment was a deal breaker for a lot of people,” Lucas Shepardson, 24, a machinist’s mate on the Petersen, told the Journal .
