Maritsa East Miners Reject Government's Restructuring Plans

Miners at Bulgaria’s Maritsa East Mines reject structural reforms proposed by the Energy Ministry, stressing that the plans could threaten the future of the country’s largest coal complex. This was announced by Biser Binev from the Podkrepa trade union and Georgi Gospodinov from the CITUB trade union at the Maritsa East coal mines, at a press conference at the BTA National Press Club in Stara Zagora on Thursday. Earlier on Thursday, Energy Minister Iva Petrova announced that Maritsa East 2 power plant and Maritsa East Mines had been merged into a new Maritsa East Holding. She said a strategic framework had been prepared to provide a sustainable future for both companies, including debt repayment and financial recovery.
