Thanks to Gloria Steinem, women are allowed to drink at this Chicago bar

For decades, women could eat at The Berghoff, but they were never welcomed inside the bar at the German watering hole and restaurant in Chicago’s Loop. That changed when Gloria Steinem and a group of female activists challenged the unspoken men-only rule and demanded a drink. “It’s not the proudest point of Berghoff history, but it is part of it,” said Pete Berghoff, owner of The Berghoff. Berghoff, the now fourth generation owner of the family business, was only six when the rule was challenged in 1969. “They wanted to have a drink at the bar and some of the male customers were not all that thrilled of it.
