Parliament Rejects Draft Decision to Have Council of Ministers Seek Exemption from Ban on Imports of Russian Petroleum Products

Parliament rejected on Wednesday a draft decision submitted by Vazrazhdane, which would task the Council of Ministers with requesting from the European Commission, within one week, an exemption from the ban on the import and purchase of crude oil and petroleum products originating from Russia or exported from Russia. The proposal was rejected by 10 votes to 13, with 115 abstentions. In its motives, the bill’s sponsor said that an emergency situation had arisen in which an armed conflict between Iran and the United States had led to a drastic increase in fuel prices on global markets. “If our country starts importing cheaper fuels from Russia in this emergency situation, this will have a positive effect on the Bulgarian economy and slow both the increase in the prices of all goods and services and inflation,” the motives for the bill said. “When Prime Minister Rumen Radev says that he will work to restore relations with Russia, this carries a lot of weight with voters.
